Ornithology ('birding') safaris
Zambia's official bird is the
African Fish Eagle - seen on the flag. There are
at least 740 different species of birds in Zambia
some of which are on the IUCN's list of endangered
fowl such as the Shoebill Stork, Wattled Crane
and Slaty Egret. Bird enthusiasts from all over
the world visit Zambia particularly in the rainy
season when the bush and flood plains are abundant
with migratory birds.
Zambia has excellent birding
safari opportunities wherever you go
and especially Lochinvar NP, Nyika NP, Kasanka
& Bangweulu. The Okavango Delta in Botswana,
the Skeleton Coast in Namibia and Lake Eyasi in
Tanzania are probably the best known birding destinations
outside of Zambia.
