Tanzania - the North circuit
Taking a safari in the north
of Tanzania is quite unlike a "fly-in"
safari in the south. A standard mobile driving
safari will include all the major parks in a circuit,
starting and ending in Arusha.
The Serengeti is undoubtedly
the best national park in the north. Bordering
the Masaai Mara in Kenya, the Tanzania side is
far less touristy and its sheer size means it
is possible to spend a long time here without
getting bored. This is where most people spend
the majority of their safari. Huge expanses of
short grass plains make game viewing exceptionally
good. The Serengeti is justifiably famous for
its huge concentrations of game especially the
predators (lion, leopard and cheetah)
The Ngorongoro Crater, although
a "must see" , is surprisingly small
once inside and most people find that one day
is quite sufficient to drive around. It's size
compared to the vast expanse of the Serengeti
means that you will see many other vehicles, especially
in peak season. The Ngorongoro highlands are great
for walking and there are many interesting Masaai
villages to explore
Lake Manyara is the park which
is combined with the Serengeti and Ngorongoro
Crater to start and / or end the northern circuit.
It is a lovely location to walk around the top
of the Rift Valley where the views are spectacular
Tarangire is a large and characteristic
park reached most easily from Arusha. The largely
forested areas and high grasses most of the year
make game viewing harder than on the short grass
plains of the Serengeti. The Tarangire River cuts
a swathe through the middle of the park, allowing
for fantastic veiws through the valley.
