zambia - chete island - lake kariba
Chete Island is one of Zambia's
best kept 'secrets'. Lake Kariba is ignored by
almost all international tour operators even though
it is right in the middle of the 'usual' safari
destinations offered to the average tourist. It
is easily accessed by road or air and uniquely
approached with a one hour sail across the beautiful
Lake Kariba. The charm of Chete lies in its beauty,
tranquility and African ambience. It nestles in
amongst a beautiful archipelago of remote islands
hitherto virtually unvisited by the tourist world,
scattered with flood plain shorelines, craggy
cliffs, spectacular gorges and African lowveld
woodlands.
Chete Island is 15km from the
main land and traditional village of Sinazongwe.
It is approximately 30 sq.km and populated with
39 mammal species including Lion, Elephant, Leopard,
Kudu and of course Hippo's and Croc's. The Island
also provides excellent fishing for Tiger, Bream
and Vundu. The island is rich in Bird life with
378 bird species having been logged. Lake Kariba
has unique scenery, spectacular sunsets and that
'something' about Africa not found anywhere else.
